SCARCE U.S. WWII REMINGTON MODEL 03-4A BOLT
ACTION SNIPER RIFLE.. Cal. 30-06. S# 3414707. Bbl. 24". Marked near muzzle "RA / flaming bomb / 9 43". The rifle has the correct offset markings to accommodate the Redfield Jr. one piece scope base. The base carries a Weaver Model 330 3/4" tube 2.75 power telescopic sight with fine crosshair reticle. This telescopic sight has been given an electro pencil marking on the right side "TELESCOPE M73B1 / SERIAL NO 9774". The first 200 scopes assembled used this electro pencil marking as they were commercial production scopes. The bbl. was not fitted with a front sight which is a correct feature of these rifles. The scope base is marked "REDFIELD" on the right rear. The base is correctly tapered downward at the rear. Bolt has the correct handle to clear the scope and the relief cut in the stock and the bevel in the receiver for the bolt handle seat is correctly done. Walnut stock set with full pistol grip. Stock has 2 recoil bolts and is marked on the left side over trigger guard with faint "RA" cross cannons "FJA". The buttstock also has a boxed "RIA / EB" in the cheek area. Encircled "P" proof under grip and 5 assembly marks in front of trigger guard. All stamped furniture including large bow trigger guard has greenish parkerized finish. WWII vintage green web sling. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: nickel plated oiler in butt. CONDITION: rifle was given an arsenal rework finish on both wood and metal accounting for the Rock Island Arsenal marking. The edges of the cutoff recess and bolt handle clearance cut are softened but there is otherwise little loss of wood and the rifle has a visually attractive finish. The scope mount retains most of its gray green parkerizing. The scope tube retains a large degree of its original finish with sm. spots of missing finish and several small areas of light oxidation. Scope optics are slightly cloudy but appear serviceable. 2 Groove bore is shiny but edges of lands show moderate wear. PROVENANCE: from the Lifelong Collection of Jim Williams. (24-2707/RW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
