SCARCE US MODEL 1900 KRAG-JORGENSEN EXPERIMENTAL
BOWIE BAYONET WITH SCABBARD. SHEATH. 1 of only approximately 2000-2800 Model 1900 experimental bowie knife bayonets produced at Springfield Armory during 1900 for the US military's Krag-Jorgensen rifles. Approximately 1,500 of these bayonets were sent to the Phillipines, with another 500 being sent to Cuba for field testing. Designed to be utilized not only as a bayonet, but also as an entrenching tool, field testing inevitably quickly showed that the design proved to be ineffective as a bayonet or an entrenching tool, with most bayonets seeing more use as machetes in the Phillipines that that of their intended purpose. this example is stamped "1900" on the left side of the ricasso, with "US" stamped on the right. The clip point bowie blade features a V-ground cutting surface on the rear edge and measures 9" from the tip to the guard, and 13 3/4" in overall length. V-notch cut2 piece smooth wood grips, with bird's head pommel. Proper blued scabbard with swivel hanger and ball tip drag. CONDITION: blade retains much of its original polished finish, with mild staining overall and some small scattered spots of discoloration. Guard and pommel exhibit a mottled gray patina, with some darker spots of discoloration. Grip panels are excellent overall. Scabbard retains the majority of its original blue finish, exhibiting some areas of mild wear and thinning that show through to gray patina, a couple small spots of cleaned pitting, some staining and spots of discoloration, as well as some scattered marks from handling and storage. A very attractive example of a scarce turn of the century US experimental bayonet. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18939-1/MLW). $1,200-2,000.
