SCARCE WEBLEY & SCOTT MARK I 1913 DATED
COMMERCIAL SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 455. S# 643. Bbl. 5". One of only 1,260 Mark I semi-automatic pistols mfg. by Webley & Scott for commercial sales. The left side of the slide is marked with the winged Webley & Scott bullet logo above "W&S", followed by "WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD/ PISTOL SELF-LOADING 455 MARK I/ 1913". Frame and slide exhibit a Crown/BV Birmingham proof, with the bbl. exhibiting both Crown/BV and Crown/BP Birmingham nitro proofs. Underside of bbl. is marked with a British broad arrow proof. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for the hammer, extractor, and a few internal parts, which are polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered vulcanite grips. Integral blade front sight with dovetailed U-notch rear sight. Left side of rear frame tang (where a commercially produced pistol would be serialized) has been ground down and touched up. All serialized parts are matching in the military fashion and include the frame (underside), slide (interior), as well as the bbl. (interior). MAGS: one 7-rd. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting light edge wear, some wear and thinning (primarily on the grip safety and grip straps), some scattered superficial handling marks, as well as some scattered spots of light to mild surface oxidation overall. Mirror bore, exhibiting strong rifling throughout. Grips show some light smoothing, as well as some scattered nicks and marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remain very good overall. An extremely attractive example of a rare commercial production Mark I pistol. (24-4049/MLW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
