SCARCE WINCHESTER MODEL 1895 BAYONET.
12 3/4" overall w/ 8 3/16" fullered blade. Bayonet marked on front right side of cross guard "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." According to the book "BAYONETS" by Jerry Janzen.100 of these bayonets were made for trials w/ the Model 95 muskets & sent to the Phillipines. Almost 15,000 of these bayonets were supplied to Russia to be used w/ the Model 95 muskets. Their short blade was disliked in Russian service & the remainder of the contract was filled by a 16" blade version. The form of the bayonet is similar to the 1895 Lee Navy but is identified by the Winchester markings. Plain cross guard w/ muzzle ring. Birdshead pommel. Walnut grips are attached by flush rivets. Metal parts are finished bright. Leather scabbard with attached leather frog. The unmarked scabbard has blued steel throat & tip. Tip has ball type finial. The frog is stitched in a manner which does not allow for use on a belt but appears to be made to use a belt hook similar to the Model 1907 Type. CONDITION: all parts of the bayonet show little or no wear including the unsharpened blade but are turning lightly gray w/ scattered spots of very light oxidation. Leather scabbard & frog show light wear, scuffing & flexing. Stitching is tight. Metal tip & throat retain most of their lightly worn original blue with peppery oxidation. PROVANANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18447/RW). $200-400.
