RIFLE. Cal. 56-46 Spencer. S# 15309. Bbl. 28 3/4" heavy weight octagon measuring 1 1/8" across flats at muzzle. Right barrel flat is marked "SCHNEIDER & BROWNING SAN FRANCISCO CA." over "P A". Dovetail mounted front sight missing post. Standard military graduated leaf rear sight with filler in second dovetail. Front receiver ring marked "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS. / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860". An added open hole is located within the marking. Left side of action has bar only for saddle ring. 9" Walnut sporter forearm. Refinished forearm shows heavy wear between attachment screw and action. Such wear is indicative in use on cross stocks which were normally used by buffalo hunters in the American west. Original straight grip stock with steel buttplate and inletted swivel base, front swivel ring is barrel mounted. Tubular magazine is not present. "American Gunsmiths" by Frank M. Sellers lists "SCHNEIDER, ALOIS, (1824-1886). San Francisco, California, 1859-1886" and "As Schneider and Browning, 1867-1871, percussion 1/2 stock and target guns". Schneider held several patents for breechloading firearms and method of rifling. Weight: 12 lbs., 6.4 oz. CONDITION: metal has dark patina appearance with added coat of varnish protection. Wood shows heavy wear and handling marks. Dark pitted bore retains largely intact rifling. (01-21349/DS). ANTIQUE. $2,500-4,000.
