SLIDE & DROP COLLATH DOUBLE SHOTGUN FINISHED &
RETAILED BY G. ULBRICHT OF DRESDEN. Cal. 16 Ga. S# 685. Willhelm Collath took over the Teschner Co. in 1880 and produced this gun and its action which had a great local following with examples being produced well into the 20th Century. This early example (pre-1891) has 30" Bernard damascus barrels. Matted top rib is gold inlaid with retailers name and address and there is scrolling gold inlay decoration at breech ends. Barrels are otherwise unmarked except for crown "V" proof applied in 1891 on bottom indicating this gun was in stock at that time. Coil spring boxlock type action is operated by a forward pivoting horn covered lever which retracts barrels and their locking lug from under the action and allow barrels to drop for loading. Safety mechanism is operated by a wide pivoting "V" notch on top tang. Action is engraved with scroll and line borders surrounding gold wire inlaid looped frames for nicely detailed game scenes on sides; with a pair of hares on left of action and a fox watching a departing duck on right. Top of action depicts a trio of quail. Maker's name and address are also gold inlaid on either side of this scene. Trigger guard and its grip are of fancy carved horn. Straight grip buttstock of well streaked European walnut measures 13-1/2" over checkered horn buttplate. Stock also features swept right hand cheekpiece, point pattern checkering and sling loop. Forend is attached to front part of action bar which extends to form pivot for barrels. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .668. R .668. Restriction: L .025 (mod). R .002 (IC). Wall thickness: L .030. R .032. STOCK: DAH: 2-1/2". DAC: 1-7/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 13-1/2". WEIGHT: 6 lb. 12 oz. CONDITION: fair to good. Barrels retaining a considerable amount of their original brown with good definition of pattern intersperced with patches of brown oxidation. A considerable amount of case hardening color remains on action with fading to gray brown. Stocks retain some original finish but have a multitude of marks, dings and dents. Checkering shows considerable wear. Horn is good with some minor cracks. Bores are mostly shiny but show a good number of scattered pits. Mechanically good. Screw heads show considerable use and barrel takedown pin replaced by a nut & bolt. The gold inlay and engraving on this gun is superb. (01-25518/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-2,000.
