ORIGINAL GUTTA PERCHA CASE. Cal. 22 short. S# 884. Bbl. 3 3/16" octagon w/ rib & semi-circular front sight. Seven shot rd. cyl. Tip-up style action, bbl. swings upward for loading. 2nd type w/ silver finished brass frame having spur trigger & bayonet style bbl. latch. 2 Piece square butt Rosewood grips. A total of 11,671 first issued revolvers were mfg. 1857-60. Second types were found in the serial number range, early 200s to about 1130. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: early style Gutta Percha cased as produced for Smith & Wesson by Littlefield Parsons & CO. Lid of case pictures the first issue revolver w/ marking "MANUFACTURED ONLY BY SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD MASSACHUSETTS". Corners of case have Decorative raised scroll ornamentation w/ upper & lower borders depicting miniature revolvers. Case interior is fitted w/ a Gutta Percha cartridge block w/ cloth interior. Interior lid has an embossed ornate design. Front right corner of case lid is missing a 1/2" by 7/16" chip. Lower portion of case on same corner is chipped w/ piece glued in place. Also includes a US Cartridge Company 100 rd. box of 22 Short cartridges. Box has decorative top cover w/ US Cartridge Company shield & orange side labels. Box is in fair-to-good condition showing minor spots of wear and contains 46 original copper cartridges w/o head stamps. Included is a newsprint advertisement for the Smith & Wesson seven shooter revolver. CONDITION: bbl. & cyl. retain over 60% fading blue showing scattered spotting. Frame retains 90% silver finish having acquired a pleasing dark tarnish. Original grips' finish shows light wear w/ scattered scratches & marks. Hammer will not hold in full cock position. Bore retains sound rifling showing spots of very light pitting. (01-25325/DS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
