Cal. 357 Mag. S# 50147 (REG 1840). Introduced in 1935, the 357 Magnum revolutionized handgun effectiveness & launched the era of modern handgun hunting. The 357 proved to be especially popular w/ law enforcement. The first Registered Magnum was presented to J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the FBI. Smith & Wesson mfg. approx. 5,500 of these very special revolvers 1935-1938. Each has it's own registration number stamped on the inside of the yoke. Built on the N Target frame, these were offered w/ numerous combinations of features. Bbl. 6 1/2" w/ rib & shrouded ejector. Rib & top of frame are checkered. Pinned Patridge front sight w/ Micrometer adj. square notch rear sight. 6 Shot fluted cyl. Pinned & recessed 5 Screw action. Polished blue finish. Case colored .250 checkered hammer w/ grooved sides marked along back "REG. U.S. PAT. OFF". Case colored .250 grooved trigger. Diamond checkered walnut Magna grips w/ silver S&W medallions. Back of right panel is stamped w/ matching S#. Left side of grip frame is stamped "B". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Smith & Wesson ".357" Magnum Certificate of Registration providing the following information " Registered No. 1840 / Serial No. 50147 / Barrel Length, 6 1/2" / Sights: Front Patridge (crossed out Sheard gold bead) / Rear U notch / Single Action Pull 3 1/2 lbs. / Double Action 10 lbs. / Sighted in at 25 yds / Hold dead center / Ammunition Magnum / Registered by S. E. Haines / Philadelphia PA". Also included is a Roy Jinks letter dated Sept. 10, 2020 describing the practice of registering the early 357 Magnums & further stating "We have researched your Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum, Pre-World War II Registered Magnum, caliber .357 Magnum, revolver in company records which indicate that your handgun, serial number 50147 w/ Reg. No. 1840 was shipped from our factory on January 21, 1937, and delivered to Murta, Appleton Co., Philadelphia, PA.". CONDITION: extremely fine retaining over 99% blue & case colored metal finish. Cyl. shows a light drag line. Grips retain very good original finish showing a few light scratches. Screw escutcheon on right panel has a sm. flat spot in outer rim. Action is extremely smooth & retains crisp mechanics. Bbl. retains bright near excellent bore w/ no signs of wear or pitting. (20-4341/DS). CURIO. $6,000-9,000.
