TO CAPTAIN S.W. EMERSON. 1) A Spanish American War era tan uniform coat probably for state militia. The blue chevrons indicate a Sergeant First Class. The buttons are eagle “I” style. The collar appears to be replaced likely during the period of use. 2) Tan pants w/ a cinch buckle in the back, 2 rear & 2 side pockets. The pants likely go w/ the above uniform. 3) US M1895 undress uniform coat w/ embroidered bullion insignia on the collar that shows crossed rifles w/ “1” above & “VT” for the First Vermont Infantry. 4) US M1895 undress uniform pants. Blue pants w/ a white stripe down each leg likely for wear w/ the above uniform. 5) Vermont Militia Spanish American war cap w/ gold embroidered Vermont state seal insignia & side buttons. Maker’s label reads in part, “M.C. LILLEY & CO”. 6) M1881 Infantry officer’s spike helmet. Helmet has a gold linked chinstrap w/ gold eagle, spike & side buttons. Eagle has an applied crossed rifle insignia w/ super imposed shield that has a silver “1” attached. Maker is M.C. Lilley. 7) 1 Pair of Spanish American War sergeant’s stripes for a Hospital Corpsman. 8) 1 Red aiguillette for an Indian War/Spanish American War dress uniform. 9) Photograph of a Captain S.W. Emerson wearing the above 1895 undress uniform & associated hat. 10) 1 Pair of braided knot epaulettes w/ white pillows for a 2nd Lieutenant. 11) A lg. box of photographs associated w/ Capt. Emerson. 12) A metal box containing Capt. Emerson’s medals, tags & awards including those shown in the lg. portrait photo in item #9. 13) An early baseball balls & strikes counter w/ the initials “SWE” on the back. 14) A sm. box of uniform insignia belonging to Capt. Emerson. 15) A lg. group of photographs on cardstock depicting Capt. Emerson & associates during the Spanish American War camped in the field & on maneuvers. 16) Photograph of the 1st Regiment Vermont National Guard taken near Ft. Ethan Allen Vermont on August 10, 1903. 17) Various award documents to Capt. Emerson from the Vermont National Guard & by local Masonic lodges. This group, though not in its entirety, likely mostly belonged to 1 individual, Captain S.W. Emerson. It would be difficult to obtain a larger group belonging to a single individual w/ the completeness shown here. An exceptional opportunity for the Spanish American War era collector. CONDITION: photographs are generally quite clear w/ some edge damage to some of the card stock. Medals show light wear. 1881 Helmet shows very light wear.
