STAFF & FIELD OFFICER’S SABER. Overall length: 37 3/4". Blade length: 30". The etched blade has a raised medial ridge with etching over the first 16". Etching includes military, patriotic, and foliate motifs that include a large "US", furled American flags, and a spread-wing American eagle. The ricasso is etched "J.A. MERRILL & CO PORTLAND ME". Gilded brass hilt featuring an American eagle on the stationary guard and a spray of arms with a federal shield on the folding guard. Highly embellished knuckle bow with an eagle on the pommel. Wire-wrapped, silver grip. Gilded brass-mounted, plated scabbard. Mounts have intricate, pierced scrollwork. Scabbard is engraved "Lieut. M. F. Dooley. Co. F. 1st. Maine Regt. From his Maine Central. R. R. Friends." Michael Dooley served in the 1st Maine Regiment during the Spanish American War. Before and after the war, he was employed by the Maine Central Railroad, where he worked until his retirement. It is quite rare to find a sword from any period presented by a railroad. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing, light gray patina with bold etching. Hilt shows areas of original gilded finish mixed with a rich mustard patina. Scabbard also shows areas of original gilded finish with the same mustard patina. Plating is a bit dirty but appears complete. Engraved presentation is bold and easily read. (02-23326/BF). $400-600.
