SPRINGFIELD 1873 TRAPDOOR WITH METCALFE CARTRIDGE
BLOCK. Cal. 45-70. S# 62941. Bbl. 32 5/8". Fixed front sight w/ slide on cover & model 1873 rear sight. 1873 dated high arch breech block w/ 1873 dated Springfield lock. Receiver ring has State of Massachusetts marking "MASS". 2 band walnut stock w/ ESA cartouche referring to principal subinspector Erskin S. Allin. Toeline of stock has initials "AL" w/ circle "P" firing proof. Right side of stock is fitted w/ the experimental Metcalfe 8 round cartridge block attachment. 1008 model 1873s were fitted w/ the Metcalfe device in 1876. No evidence exists to show they were issued. Metcalfe parts appeared as surplus into the 1940s. CONDITION: metal retains over 80% lightly faded blue. Stock has age darkened appearance showing scratches & marks. Metcalfe block is in very good condition. Bright bore retains lightly worn rifling. PROVENANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J.
