SPRINGFIELD 1886 EXPERIMENTAL TRAPDOOR CARBINE.

Proposed by the board on cavalry equipment in 1884, the model 1886 experimental carbine is the result of an attempt to create a shoulder arm adaptable to be used by the infantry, cavalry & artillery. Only 1000 of these distinct carbines were produced & issued to cavalry regiments in the American west. Bbl. 24". Blade front sight w/ snap-on cover, Buffington rear sight marked "XC". Model 1873 low arch breechblock. Flat style Springfield lockplate. Full length band fastened carbine stock has rounded forearm tip w/ saddle ring & bar on left side. Single bbl. band is mounted w/ a contoured style swivel for scabbard insertion. Trapdoor carbine buttplate. Three page information sheet addressed to Lewis E. and Layton Zane Yearout. Sheets were completed by Richard D. Branum and supplied by Dr. Vance Haynes. These sheets reportable pertain to this rifle and states: "This is the gun from Fort Buford, Dakota Territory." Also included are a printed sheet from the National armory and trapdoor production data from trapdoorcollector.com UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 3 piece cleaning rod held in stock compartment. CONDITION: 80% dull lightly faded blue showing scattered spotting. Breechblock retains traces of case colors. Sanded & refinished stock shows numerous scratches, marks & dents.
