DUELLING PISTOLS BY SAMUEL NOCK. Cal. 54 smooth bore. S# 6267. The 9 1/2" octagon twist barrels with under ribs are engraved "Samuel Nock 180 Fleet St. London. Gun Maker to His Majesty" on top flats. Case hardened patent breeches with platinum touch holes and gold lines at rears have gold poincon marked with a crown over "S. NOCK" "LONDON". S#s and London proofs are on bottom flat. Case hardened breech irons with integral "U" notch rear sights are engraved with scroll and arms. Locks with chamfered and rebated plates having square tails are fitted with reinforced serpentine cocks, waterproof pans, bridled frizzens and feather springs with large rollers and bulbous finials. Locks have feather border engraving around some arms, scroll and "Samuel Nock". Locks are also fitted with back sliding safetys that engage at half cock. Case hardened trigger plates have stylized pineapple finials. Blued trigger guards, have finger spurs and armorial engraving on bows. Root walnut stocks have checkered slim fishtail grips. Vacant rectangular crest plates are at tops of grips. Stocks attach to barrels with captive side bolts through rectangular silver escutcheons. Greenheart ramrods with horn tips and brass tails (worm under tail on one rod) mount through single beaded pipes and steel nose caps. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: pistols are housed in their original mahogany case with circular brass medallion on top and inlet pendular hook and key lock closure. Case is lined in green cloth with a large rectangular Samuel Nock label in lid. Case contains some accessories which appear to be original including three cavity copper bodied flask, nutcracker type round ball mould marked "36", greenheart loading rod with ebony head and brass tail, leather flint wallet and a walnut cleaning and dusting brush. There are two covered compartments with bone knobs on mahogany covers, one contains a bag of balls, the other a priming funnel, two flints and a reproduction oil bottle. CONDITION: exceptionally fine, retaining nearly all original finishes on metal and wood. Case hardening color is very fine on breech irons and locks, is a bit thin on pineapples. Trigger guards retain over 50% original blue, temper blue is very strong on feather springs. Stocks retain nearly all their original oil finish with a good scattering of light marks. Bores are bright with a some frosting, mechanically fine. Case has many rubs and scrapes on exterior with old added oil. Interior cloth is fine with some rubs, label is foxed, bubbled and has some rubs through. Accessories are generally fine. A very presentable pair of pistols.
