SHARPSHOOTERS RIFLE. Cal. 66. S# 1760. Bbl. 35 3/8". Swiss percussion musket subsequently converted to a Cantonal Sharpshooters rifle for the Luzern Canton. The faceted breech is marked "84" over the top flat, with "K (Luzern Canton shield insignia) L" above an encircled "Z" proof on the left quarter flat, as well as "1760" and a Belgian sole proof on the left flat. Model 1842 pattern lockplate is unmarked. Plain wood half-stock appears to have been sanded and reoiled at one time, and features a cheek rest, Schuetzen style buttplate, Schuetzen style trigger guard, and sling loops. Double set triggers. Blade front sight, with U-notch rear sight graduated "2", "4", "6", and "8". Underside of bbl. features a single ramrod ferrule, with a bayonet socket mounted on the right at the muzzle. CONDITION: metal components retain a gray patina, exhibiting scattered areas of darker age related discoloration, with varying degrees of pitting present overall. Brass trigger guard exhibits a mellow patina. Good bore, exhibiting dark pitting in the grooves, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Action and double set triggers function appropriately when cycled by hand. Stock shows some superficial marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. (01-26196/MLW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
