SWORD BELT SASH IDENTIFIED TO GEORGIA CONFEDERATE
MAJOR JOSEPH PALMER, “SOUTHERN RIGHTS ARTILLERY BATTALION”. From the collection of longtime Confederate collector Ashley Halsey, Jr (1908-1998) is this identified fine red silk sash given to him by Lt. Col. Jim Palmer (1889-1962) in 1960. The sash was his father’s according to accompanying card who commanded Artillery Battalion at the Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina where Ashley Halsey Jr’s father also commanded a battery. There is a lot of information on card & the only incorrect statement is that Halsey noted that Major Palmer was a West Pointer; he was not but he did graduate the West Point of the South, the Citadel. Maj. Joseph Palmer (1835-1898) organized the 14th Battalion Georgia Light Artillery (Southern Rights Artillery) in mid 1862 after disbanding of his “Southern Rights Guards” attached to the 1st Georgia infantry. A summary history of Major Palmer & his service can be found linked online. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: card of provenance signed by Ashley Halsey Jr. March 5, 1972.
