Ca. 1846-1859. 6.5" x 9.5". Depicts former Texas General and President Samuel Houston as a United States Senator. Houston served two terms as a Democrat Senator from February, 1846 to March 1859. In that time, he participated in important votes that would determine the future of the United States, such as the Oregon Bill of 1848 (Yes), the Compromise of 1850 (Yes), and in the latter years of his term was a supporter of the Know-Nothing movement. As former President of the Republic of Texas, he remains the only former head of state of a foreign nation to serve as a US Member of Congress.
No studio marks, verso with multiple inscriptions, including "General Houston in the U.S. Senate/Honoree at First San Jacinto Ball", "Gen Sam Houston while in the U.S. Senate", and "by Powell".
