Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980), Pond Lily is probably the most famous of all pueblo potters. She and her husband, Julian (1897-1943), discovered in 1918, how to produce the now-famous black pottery and both spent the remainder of their careers perfecting it. Her pieces can be found in the Smithsonian and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, as well as, private collections. They are referenced in Hayes & Blom, "Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni", Schaaf's, "Pueblo Indian Pottery: 750 Artist Biographies" & Berger's "Pueblo & Navajo Contemporary Pottery" to name a few.
