San Ildefonso Pueblo Turtle Pottery
This San Ildefonso Pueblo Turtle Pottery was made by innovative & contemporary artisan, Russell Sanchez. A beautiful piece, it was hand built, fired & stone polished in a blackish-brown color. On the front, Russell scratched (scrafitto) a turtle pattern, the symbol and of good health and a long life.Very nice, it's about 4" tall and 4-1/4" wide. Offered for sale from the Phoenix Heard Museum, it has some light wear around the neck and body. Signed, we believe this is one of his early pieces, circa 1980's. This San Ildefonso Pueblo Turtle Pottery is one of a kind! Russell (1966- ) has been working clay since 1980. He is an award winning artist who's work is considered upper end and elite, and he has exhibited all over the southwest. His work is in the Museum of Indian as and Culture, Museum of Natural History LA, the Smithsonian and the Heard Museum. He is referenced in Schaaf's, "Pueblo Indian Pottery, 750 Artist Biographies" and Hayes/Blom's "Southwestern Pottery Anasazi to Zuni".
