Exceptionally rare English military breech loading flintlock carbine. Urbanus Sartoris (Italian, or possibly Milanese) patented his breechloading 1817 (#4107) . Anthony Farindon Biven is recorded as "Manufacturer of breechloading rifle patented by Urbanus Sartoris. He had his business at 16 Regent St, London, between 1822-1825. The breech opens by rotating the the flip-up handle attached to the barrel. unlocks the interrupted thread allows the barrel to slide forward . The breech tips up to load powder, and ball. Serial number nine is stamped below tip-up breech on receiver, and on top of the barrel breech. A.F.B. (Anthony Farindon Biven) stamped underneath tip-up breech. Crown over V proof Underneath tip-up breech. There is a brass handle froward of the triggerguard. The gun balances perfectly at this point. The number of these made is unknown. An internet search shows Serial number 3 is housed in the collection at the Royal Armouries in London. Serial number 5 was sold at Bonham's Auction in 2013, and serial number 15, was sold at Wallis, and Wallis Auction in 2005. 18" barrel, with rear notch, and front blade sights. 36.5" overall. European hardwood stock, with cheek rest. Brass buttplate. 11 3/4" saddle ring bar is mounted left to the metal forearm cap/stock. ( Missing ring) Breech mechanism, and flintlock action operate fine. The escutcheon on the left stock retains about 40% of the brass plating. Triggerguard and handle are tarnished. Bore is dark/rusty. Barrel, Lock, breech, hammer, and tang have mostly turned a brown patina, with surface rust. About 15%, of the chrome plating is present. Wood is good, with numerous small scratches/dings present. Nothing serious. There is a minor chip on the cheek rest. Needs a good cleaning/oil. A rare opportunity to own this very rare firearm, as they do not come up for sale very often.
