.45-70 caliber, 30" barrel, S/N 18323. Blued barrel with case hardened breechblock, lockplate, and hammer. Checkered forend and wrist. Dovetailed blade front sight with folding buckhorn and ladder rear sight. Breechblock marked "MODEL/1873/[eagle]/US". Stock storage trap complete with four-piece cleaning rod. In 1878, seeking to divest itself of its surplus arms, Springfield Armory sold a number of pieces to the New York firm of Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham. This particular piece was originally a Model 1873 carbine shipped to Rock Island for issuing to the 2, 3 and 7th Cavalry, and then more than likely issued to the 7th Cavalry, as it falls within the "Custer Range" of carbines used by that regiment. As it was returned to Springfield Arsenal, it was likely considered unserviceable.  In 1877 the Springfield Arsenal sold a lot of surplus weapons and parts to Schuyler Hartley & Graham, then SH&G took the parts and turned them into Sporting Rifles and sold them retail from 1878-1890. **Fine condition as-is. Barrel retains nearly all of its blued finish with some minor scratches. Case hardening is bright and vivid. Stock shows some dents and handling marks but no major cracks or splits. Action is tight and functional with an excellent bore showing string rifling. A very attractive piece with a unique history.** $5,000-$8,000
