Sharps 1874 Meachum Conversion Rifle
Made by Sharps Rifle Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, circa 1876. Rifle is constructed from leftover parts from Civil War Percussion Rifles by Meachum of St. Louis, in this case, the action and butt stock appear to be from a Civil War Era 1859 or 1863 Carbine, as evidenced by a plugged hole in left side of action where a saddle ring bar was and the stock having an iron patchbox. Rifle was fitted at Bridgeport with a 30" octagon blued barrel with Rocky Mountain front sight and R.S. Lawrence rear graduated flip sight. Barrel is marked with "Old Reliable" marking and Sharp's Bridgeport address with breech marked with "Calibre 45/2 1/10" or 45-70 caliber. Case-hardened converted Civil War Percussion action with 1852 and 1848 Patent markings with Hartford collar and plain single trigger. Walnut stocks with forearm having another serial number crossed out and frame serial number stamped in channel. Barrel is also numbered to frame. J.T. Livengood Collection. CALIBER: 45-70. S/N: C32594. FFL STATUS: Antique.
