Sharps Model 1874 Military Rifle Falling Block Vintage 50-70 cal 1871-77
We are not 100% certain on whic factory did the manufacture ..
It appears to be a Military unit (long barrel) and bore measures out .512
We are not 100% that 50-70 is the caliber but it appears that it is correct as round
fits snugly and extracts well....
THIS IS NOT A REPRODUCTION.. THIS IS THE REAL THING..
Based on the receiver and the serial number, it is a Sharps Model 1874 Military Rifle
. The "C" in the serial number stands for a 1, so the serial number is 152152, which
puts it in the range for Sharps Model 1874s, which ran from serial number 150000
to 163000 more or less. From existing records, only 1,328 were made at the
Hartford factory between 1871 and 1877.
The caliber should be marked on the barrel, but it is has worn off.
While it is a Military Rifle model, these were often purchased and shipped out west
for buffalo hunting. A very cool piece of history.
The barrel retains most of its original finish throughout its length 29" although it does
have a wonderful color patina to it..
The muzzle area has just the slightest chipping otherwise the barrels appearance is
very pleasing.
Rear sight has the long flip-up leaf with sliding appture.
Forward of this is a marking that reads SHARPS RIFLE MANUFG. CO HARTFORD
CONN in three lines.
Behind the sight is a good single line stamping stating NEW MODEL .
Bore has fair rifling throughout consdiering its age...
Breech, lock and triggerguard show hints of case colors but are mostly dark.
All patent marks are near crisp and the lock marking is strong.
Action works properly
Walnut stock is in very good condition with no cracks or damage.
The surface of the stock shows light wear with the usual dings, dents and scratches
associated with age.
There are no visible cracks. Both sling swivels are present as are all three barrel
bands.
Overall this weapon does show signs of some use but it also shows that it was
cared for.
Sharps rifles are a series of large-bore, single-shot, falling-block, breech-loading
rifles, beginning with a design by Christian Sharps in 1848 and ceasing production
in 1881.
They were renowned for long-range accuracy. By 1874, the rifle was available in a
variety of calibers, and it was one of the few designs to be successfully adapted to
metallic cartridge use.
The Sharps rifles became icons of the American Old West with their appearances
in many Western-genre films and books. Perhaps as a result, several rifle
companies offer reproductions of the Sharps rifle.
If anyone can through more light on this rifle it will be apreciated .
There is a RESERVE set on this one of $1500
