SN: 140462 WWI era U.S. Army contract large frame double-action service revolver chambered in .45 Auto, manufactured in Springfield, MA . Features a blued finish, pinned 5.5" tapered barrel, forged round blade front sight, "u" notched rear sight, fluted six-shot swing-out cylinder, non-shrouded ejector rod, case hardened .265" smooth trigger, case hardened .265" hammer with knurled spur, five screw square butt N service frame with lanyard ring on the butt, and smooth walnut grips. Matching serial numbers are found on the frame, barrel, cylinder. Other Markings: Frame -"U.S/ARMY/MODEL/1917" & "No/140462”. Barrel- "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A./PATENTED DEC.17.1901. FEB.6.1906. SEP.14.1909", "S.&W. D.A. 45", "140462". There are 3 eagle head proofs, "S1 & S2" inspectors proofs indicating late war manufacture. No U.S. Property stamp on barrel, "SP" cartouche on right grip panel, feint (?). Revolver retains approximately 40% of its original blued finish showing handling wear, scattered scratches, and thinning on the gripstraps. Action is crisp with excellent lock-up, the bore is good with good rifling & minor pitting, the markings are sharp and the matching wood grips are very good.` Condition is NRA Good. C&R Firearm.
