Smith & Wesson 2nd Model Schofield revolver, .45 S&W caliber, 7” barrel, S/N 5519 with additional number “235” period stamped on the backstrap; blued finish, smooth wood grips with partially visible inspector’s cartouches on each grip and“US” stamped on the rear of the butt strap. This revolver is in overall very good + condition showing considerable original blue finish on the frame and cylinder with a brown patina to the barrel and traces of original blue in protectedareas. The cylinder is numbered 7514; the action is crisp, the markings sharp and the bore very good to near fine. The grips are also very good overall. Accompanied by a folder with information from the Man At Arms October 2000 edition, alsofrom David Chicoine’s book “Smith & Wesson Sixguns of the Old West”, Charles Pate’s book “Smith & Wesson American Model” and other related information concerning researchers’ opinions that Schofields displaying this secondary numbering onthe backstrap area were U.S. military sidearms provided to the San Francisco Police Department during a time of great civil unrest in the city by the bay at the end of the 1870’s.
