Spanish Colonial Cup Hilt Rapier, ca. early to mid-1800s, 36" double-edged narrow blade with a thin fuller running the full length of both sides of the blade, and a 5.75" dia. steel cup with riveted serrated washers on both sides where the blade tang comes thru. Cross guard is round steel that tapers wider at the tips and is about 12" long, with a curved portion going up to the pommel. Screws attach the cup to bosses on the cross guard. Grip is covered with woven thin copper wire with steel ferrules at the top and bottom. Pommel is a round pillow shape with the tang peened through at the top. Probably locally hilted, the blade may be much older. Wire wrapping is most likely a later addition, as most Colonial swords had plain wood or bone handles, but it is very well done and shows age. Condition is very good, the blade showing age graying, minor pitting, and a few light edge nicks, with a small bend near the tip. Cupped guard shows an old cleaned patina with some age graying, light rust, and small dings; inside of the cup is painted black. Cross guard and finger guard have been cleaned and show age graying and light red rust on the top edges. Grip has a nice dark patina to the copper wire with tight wrapping. Pommel shows age graying and light rust patina, with just a slight amount of movement on the tang. No scabbard. Est.: $800-$1,200.
