Spencer Model 1865 Repeating Carbine by Burnside Rifle Co.
serial #8945A, 56 Spencer, 20'' three-groove barrel with a partially bright good bore showing some scattered areas of old oxidation and strong rifling throughout. This interesting example may be a commercial sale carbine or government reject as it has a peculiar ''A'' suffix after the serial number, there do not appear to be any inspector marks on the parts though a few of them do show scattered rather prominent punch marks. The metal surfaces have mostly toned to a mix of deep gray and gray-brown patina with some scattered old light pitting and handling marks. The inside protected areas of the breechblock retain a healthy amount of nice case-hardened colors and the arm is not equipped with the Stabler cutoff device. All markings remain intact and strong, the top chamber flat bearing the usual Model, patent and maker's information. The smooth walnut buttstock and forend remain in very good plus condition showing some older added finish that has darkened from the years with scattered light dings and handling marks. The sling swivels, ring and proper sights are intact, the barrel is matching the action though does not bear the ''A'' suffix and the action seems to function well mechanically. A very good example that is a little bit out of the ordinary for the antique arms collector. (13C11625-2) {ANTIQUE} (1200/1800)
