Rifle. Percussion. U.S. military issued rifle. This is a model 1816 flintlock musket converted to percussion system using the Belgium style alteration, commonly known as the "Cone type Conversion. Converted by Hewes, and Phillips of Newark, NJ. This is the 2nd type conversion ( About 12,000 done) 58" overall. 42" smoothbore barrel, with 3 leaf 1861 rear sight. Front blade sight. Bayonet lug. "US" marked buttplate. 1862 dated barrel, with "P" proof. Lock plate has original stampings of "Springfield 1838", "US" over eagle. Flat side of breech plug stamped "H&P". Steel ramrod in place. Escutcheon on left stock is stamped with an "S". Triggerguard guard plate is stamped "T", and "FR". Metal is very good with a few scratches/dings. Wood is near excellent, with minor scratches/dings. Bore appears very good, a little dark. Two-cock hammer locks up tight. A really nice one. Comes with a vintage leather sling. NRA Condition-Very Good. Antique Firearm.
