US Military single shot breech loading "Trapdoor" rifle chambered for .50-70. Features an approx 32" barrel, sidelock action, lifting breech block to allow loading/unloading, adjustable sights, sling swivels, cleaning rod under barrel. Bore is in fair shape, with some brightness, and spiral areas of what appears pitting along the rifling. Cleaning rod is in fair condition, brown color. Barrel and action are an even smooth brown, with areas of pitting near stock line, spots along top/side of barrel, and at breech hinge. Bands, lock, triggerguard, and sling swivels show evidence of deeper rust that has been removed, leaving a heavily pitted surface, brownish gray in color, with silvery high spots from wear. Wood is Poor condition with many cracks running lengthwise in the receiver area, wood loss along edge with barrel, many dents and small gouges all over. Buttplate is heavily pitted, with markings barely visible that may be regimental or other property marks. Stock is marked "1" over "G" both sides of butt ("G" upside down on right) and "1" left of receiver. Stock has evidence of a shield shape escutcheon at heel that is no longer present. Serial number marking is possibly applied post manufacture by the receiving agency or unit; many of these saw Militia use. Condition is NRA Fair ***Antique Firearm***
