Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Single-Shot Infantry Rifle, #464774, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel, block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and adjustable folding-leaf Buffington (correctly marked ''R'' for Rifle) rear sights, marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/P'' and ''A'' at breech; hinged trapdoor breechblock is marked ''U.S./Model/1884'' at front; flat lockplate is marked ''(spread-wing eagle with shield)'' and ''U.S./Springfield'' below latch; steel mountings include two spring-retained barrel bands (top with stacking swivel), two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, nosecap, and slotted button-tip ramrod; one-piece oil-stained walnut fullstock has a very sharp ''SWP'' (Samuel W. Porter) over ''1889'' script inspector's mark opposite lock. Mfg'd ca. 1886-91. Condition is very good+. Barrel retains approx. 85% smooth thinning military blue; bands, trigger guard and nosecap show deep original blue; trapdoor retains brightly mottled case colors; balance of metal is gunmetal gray with sharp edges and clear markings throughout. Stock is solid with marks at butt, a sharp encircled ''P'' proof at belly, and pleasing grain and color. Action is strong; bore shines with deep rifling. Est.: $700-$900. (Antique)
