.41 cal, 34 1/2'' cast steel octagon barrel with recessed muzzle and a mostly bright very good plus bore showing some scattered light oxidation in the grooves and otherwise strong rifling throughout. The barrel has mostly toned to a pleasant deep plum-brown patina showing some scattered light dings and old minor oxidation staining. The top flat has a short railed section for sights and is maker marked ''J.J.SCHLAEPFER / in / GLARUS''. The breech plug with swirling bolster is mostly a medium gray patina while the breech tang and the lockplate show fine silvery case-hardening, the plate with generous vibrant colors throughout. The fancy spur triggerguard and schuetzen buttplate with acorn heel finial also retain some strong remnants of silvery case-hardening mixing with plum-brown patina. The smooth walnut stock remains in about very fine condition retaining most of its original varnish and showing some scattered light dings, a number of thin drying cracks in the grain most noticeable along the toe line, and a small repaired flake near the tip. Hardware fit remains quite nice overall and the stock features a nice rounded left-side cheekpiece, horn schnabel tip, German silver wedge escutcheons and brass pendulum patchbox. The rifle is sighted with a rather compact fully-adjustable tang sight with medium aperture disc, fully-adjustable u-notch rear sight and windage-adjustable target globe front sight with bead-on-post insert. The rifle includes a period leather-wrapped steel ramrod and a nicely made walnut palm rest. The lock with double set triggers is single-acting and seems to function well mechanically. Glarus is the small capital of the Swiss canton of the same name and this is a nice example of a classic Swiss schuetzen rifle. (13B11108-84) {ANTIQUE} [Tom Devers Collection] (1500/2000)
