Cal. 303 British. S# 15422. Bbls. 26" with nitro proofs. Bbls. are marked "T. Bland & Sons, 430 West Strand, London" and "WINNERS OF THE 1885 AMERICAN RIFLE TRIALS". Features include a sunken rib with a ramp-mounted bead front sight and a quarter-rib-mounted express rear sight with one standing and three folding leafs. Case-colored boxlock action with exquisite deep relief carving on the bolsters against a stippled background. The body of the receiver has tasteful borderline engraving with sunbursts around the hinge pin. Features include double-underlug locking with a doll's head extension and side clips. Extractors and double triggers; the front trigger is hinged. Horn-tipped splinter forearm and round knob stock of fine English walnut with hand checkering, gloss finish, and sling swivels; the front swivel is bbl.-mounted. Toeline of the stock has an oval presentation plate with the initials "NEJ". LOP: 14" to a steel buttplate with a widow's peak and sunburst engraving around the screw holes. DAC: 1 5/8". DAH: 2 3/4". WEIGHT: 8 lbs, 8 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rifle is housed in its original oak and leather case with the maker's label. The case has a red felt-fitted interior containing turn screws, cleaning accessories, and an oil bottle. The exterior lid of the case is marked "FRANK B. DEBENHAM". The case exterior shows some staining with small tears and handling marks, with the interior showing wear and fading with grime. Leather-trimmed canvas case cover is in fair condition. CONDITION: bbls. retain 80% of their lightly faded blue, showing muzzle wear. Sides of the action have some lightly visible case colors. Floorplate and trigger guard retain 80% blue. Stock and forearm have a good gloss finish, with freshened checkering showing scattered scratches and marks. Bores have worn rifling with a dark appearance in the grooves. (22-2283/DS).
