TAINO PRECOLUMBIAN GAMING BALL SALAMANDER CARVINGS
Taino. PreColumbian. Gaming ball with 2 salamander like creatures encircling the ball. The curvilinear lines symbolize water, thus the animal association. The salamanders are full bodied and well defined. Extremely unusual to find animals on gaming balls. It should be noted, that although these are called gaming balls they had some other unknown ritual use. The balls are well finished and rarely show any sign of impact wear from gaming. Made from a dense stone possibly andesite. Diameter 2.5”. Taino Culture c600-1500 AD. Private collection, Decatur Ga. Curated by Larry Roberts author of “Taino Sculptures, Art of the Gods”. “Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust” and newly released “Taino Zemis and Other Heads of State, ReDiscovering Caribbean Art”.
