TRULY FINE CONFEDERATE ARTILLERY OFFICERS FROCK
COAT BELONGING TO CAPTAIN CUTHBERT H. SLOCOMB OF THE WASHINGTON ARTILLERY. A stunning Confederate Artillery captain's frock coat likely dating from late 1862 to 1863 showing fine tailoring. The double breasted frock coat was made for Captain Cuthbert H. Slocomb of the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is made of light weight, soft, cadet gray wool twill. There are 2 rows of 7 Confederate manuscript "A" buttons, each measuring 22mm on the front of the coat. The buttons are backmarked, "HALFMANN & TAYLOR .MONTGOMERY.". They are of English mfg. imported for use by the Confederacy. The 14 conventional button holes are made w/ a buttonhole stitch around each opening. The buttons are arranged from top to bottom in descending distance from the center ranging from 2 3/8" to 1 1/4". This arrangement combined w/ 7 3/8" darts extending up from the waist seam, achieves a finely tailored look. The projecting breast is somewhat straight and does not present an exaggerated plastron front. The 2 piece, 1 1/2" standing collar is made of the same cloth as the frock coat & lined in sky blue wool twill. Red wool broadcloth piping surrounds the collar & extends down the flap front of the dbl. breasted coat. The rear vent & adjacent pocket flaps are also piped in the same red wool broadcloth. There are 4 additional 22mm manuscript "A" buttons at the top & bottom of the 9" pocket flaps. 1 Button is missing from the top of the left flap. 3 Horizontal, gold braided on yellow wool, 3/8" thick bars measuring 3", 3" and 3 1/4" from top to bottom respectively, are sewn directly to the uniform denoting the rank of captain. The frock coat has 2 piece sleeves each measuring 4" across at the cuff and 8 1/2" across at the elbow. Each of the nonfunctional cuffs have three 13mm manuscript "C" buttons w/ "TREBLE RICH STANDD" backmarks. The cuffs are pointed using the same red wool broadcloth used as piping on the coat. The breast lining is constructed of the same material as the coat itself from the button line to the edge of the coat. The side, back & the balance of the lining's front panels are made of red wool w/ a cotton warp. The padded breast is secured by V-shaped rows of hand stitching. The skirts & sleeves are lined w/ what appears to be a cotton silk mixture in black w/ printed tiny white 3 leaf clovers w/ shading near the stem. On the left side of the breast is a 5" wide horizontal slit pocket. The bag of the breast pocket & the tail pockets are constructed of unbleached cotton osnaburg. The coat measures 19" up the back & 17" up the front from the base of the collar to the waist seam. The skirt measures 18" in the back & front from the waist seam down. The back sleeve seam measures 24 1/2". Perhaps the most important feature of this rare coat is the collar tab used for hanging the coat. On the back side of the collar tab the name, "C.H. Slocomb" is written in ink identifying this monumentally important group of Confederate uniforms. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Les Jensen authentication letter. CONDITION: overall, this frock coat shows very light wear w/ no noticeable fading to the vibrant cadet gray, w/ light blue hues, color of the uniform body. The coat body has widely scattered tiny holes, likely from moth damage. More significant insect damage can be seen in a 4" area at the left rear hem & to a lesser degree around the remainder of the hem. The piping remains a brilliant red w/ no notable loss or fading. Buttons on the front sleeves & rear vent retain 85% of their original gilded finish. A few buttons appear to have been reattached or had existing threads reinforced. The quilted red lining shows moderate to heavy wear & some separations particularly in the lower left near the waist. The color is likely a bit faded but remains reasonably bright. The sleeve & skirt lining show light wear overall w/ only very minor fading. This frock coat, w/ its vivid original coloring & brilliant gold buttons, appears virtually exactly as it would have appeared when Captain Slocomb wore it while serving the Confederate States of America.
