FLAG. 3’ x 4’ regulation November 22, 1965 dated inspection label, double applique hand and machine embroidered eagle and crest on a blue field, gold fringe. Motto: “DUCTI AMORE PATRIAE” which translates: “Led by Love of Country.” The 12th Infantry is known as the “Warrior Regiment”. The 3rd Battalion are known as the “Braves” The 12th US infantry has long military history starting during the Civil War with the firing on Fort Sumter in 1861, Indian wars, Spanish American war, WW1, WW2. The 12th regiment was the only regiment to send five battalions to Vietnam. The 3rd battalion was deployed September 1966 to Vietnam and stayed four years till December 1970. The 3rd battalion had 268 KIA and died from wounds, earned 2 Presidential Unit Citations for “Peiku” & “Dak To”. Seven soldiers of the regiment were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The flag is Army blue and features the regimental crest within the Eagle. Part of the shield is blue, the color of the infantry branch. The two crosses represent the loss of 50 per cent of the unit at Battle of Gaines’ Mill in 1862, while the Teepee represents their actions in post-Civil War Indian campaigns. The battlements stand for the capture of a Spanish blockhouse at El Caney in Cuba and the Sea Lion is from the Coats of Arms of the Philippines. Above the Eagle is a mailed arm holding a Spanish flag which represents the capture of Spanish colors at El Caney. CONDITION: very good overall other than five or six large bullet sized holes in the upper quadrant of the fly around the 3rd Battalion Insignia. (02-19982-30/JS). $300-500.
