The Last Flag of Fallujah
From the personal collection of Colonel Eric C. Hastings USMC (Ret), the Battalion Commander for 1st Battalion, 4th Marines. Historically known as "The China Marines", Task Force 1/4 found itself assigned to its third combat deployment in Fallujah Iraq, from October 2008 to May 2009. This flag, carried during seven months in Fallujah and the surrounding area, represents the last flag in possession of a US service member while the unit physically resided in and controlled the city of Fallujah. From the liberation of Fallujah in November of 2003 until April, 2009, Marine Battalions shared the responsibility of providing a "safe" environment for its citizens. During 1st Battalion, 4th Marines deployment, it was the sole unit assigned to cover down on that responsibility. Four months into the deployment, it was decided that the Battalion would be "off-ramped". Not being replaced meant demilitarizing 15 of our 17 combat outposts and turning the "keys" back over to full control of the city to local Governmental Officials. The Iraqi police would assume full responsibility for the five entry control points that had previously been so successful in minimizing threats from entering the city, with the 1st Iraqi Division in support if needed. Task Force 1/4 would spend its last month in overwatch, before returning to the United States. After "passing the keys" and leaving the Government Center after saying goodbye to my Iraqi counterparts, Colonel Hastings returned to his Forward Operating Base, packed his gear, taking this flag out of his MRAP that had travelled nearly 15,000 miles during patrols and battlefield circulation, and came home. All proceeds raised from the sale of this item will go toward veteran activities. We sincerely thank Colonel Hastings for this priceless 100% donation!
