Turkish Horsemans Flintlock Pistol
Long Flintlock pistols such as this example were carried in saddle holsters by Horsemen in many Middle Eastern countries. The predominant use was by the Turks as their influence and Empire covered much of the Magrib, Levant and Balkan states. Pistols such as this one were often made in European countries such as Spain and Italy and were exported all over the Middle East. The recognizable features on the Turkish pistols is the higher quality of workmanship and the embellishments applied to such weapons. This pistol bears the star and crescent inlaid in the stock behind the barrel breech plug tang. The barrel is 13" long and overall length is 21".

The bore is approximately .60 caliber. There are several makers' marks on the barrel including the makers sink or cartouche (now illegible). There is a silver breech band and silver front sight. The brass fittings are cast and chased in floral and leaf motifs. The butt of the stock also bears the Turkish crescent and a panoply of arms and militaria such as canons, drums, pikes, battle axes and spears. The period of use of this fine pistol is approximately 1780 and would have been the property of a person of rank in the Turkish military.
