U.S. INDIAN WAR ERA MODEL 1868 SPRINGFIELD SINGLE
SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. S# 24256. Numbers match on receiver & bbl. Bbl. 32 1/2". Ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yds. Stud type front sight. This rifle was the 1st of the new series to be mfg. w/ a separate receiver which made for much stronger construction & may be found w/ relined & newly constructed bbls. The breech block is dated 1869 & has the eagle head acceptance mark & "U.S.". The 1863 dated beveled edge lockplate has the eagle & "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" markings. The unmarked walnut stock is retained by 2 split oval bands retained by springs. Correct single shouldered ramrod is present. CONDITION: stock has vintage arsenal rework finish w/ extensive wear & handling marks. Notable transverse dents in forend. Long crack extending from left side of receiver ring through the forward eschuteon & ends over trigger guard. Lg. missing chip in ramrod channel. Metal was bright but has now turned overall gray & patina w/ wear & peppery oxidation. Bore has degree of shine w/ sharp lands but areas of pitting throughout.
