U.S. MILITARY MANN ACCURACY TEST DEVICE USING

SMITH CORONA MODEL 1903 A3 BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 4798556. Bbl. 4-grooved 22" marked on bottom “HFG” “1971” “7553795” “9805” & “S/N 0062”. No sights are fitted. These accuracy test devices were named for famed ballistics experimenter Dr. Franklin W. Mann & used his system of a massive bbl. fitted w/ concentric rings to slide in a “V” rest to test the accuracy of ammunition. These devices were used by both Army Ordnance & commercial ammunition plants including Frankford Arsenal, Springfield Armory & Winchester Repeating Arms dealing w/ government contract ammunition production. Information on these unique devices may be found in the Springfield 1903 Rifles by Brophy. The Smith Corona marked Model “03-A3” is fitted w/ a “Remington” marked bolt assembly w/electro-penciled matching S#. Aperture rear sight does not appear to have been fitted. Cutoff is marked “R”. Stamped “Remington” small bow trigger guard. Walnut stock w/ 2 recoil bolts. Forend has been removed forward of receiver ring & buttstock removed behind grip leaving a section approx. 12-1/4" long. Straight bbl. measures approx. 1-1/4" in dia. except for stop ring ahead of receiver which measures 1-3/4" in dia. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: padded cardboard shipping box from CMP. CONDITION: receiver has original war time Parkerized finish w/ light wear & handling marks. Bbl. has 80% blue finish w/ light wear & scratches. Stock has moderate wear, scratches & staining w/ notable gouge on left side of grip. Near excellent shiny bore. (22-4377/RW). CURIO. $800-1,200.
