MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. S# 22750. S# matches on receiver & bbl. Bbl. 32 1/4" measured to breech face. Ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Stud type front sight modified to tapered top blade.1863 dated lock w/ beveled plate marked w/ "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" & "eagle". Two click tumbler breechblock dated "1869" has "eagle head" & "U.S.". Right side of bbl. over chamber has tiny "H" & "2882". Walnut stock retained by 2 bands. Correct type ramrod. Buttplate is marked "US". CONDITION: stock has arsenal rework type finish w/ loss of wood in inletted areas. Markings are no longer visible. Buttstock was likely detached & has had extensive hobbyist gunsmith repair in grip area. Notable dent in left side of butt. Extensive chipping on panel over trigger guard plus chipping at bottom of forend & ramrod channel. Hammer & lockplate have 50% original blue w/ oxidation & fine pitting. Balance of metal is overall gray w/ varying degrees of wear, oxidation, fine pitting & handling marks. Bbl. shows signs of rust removal forward of rear sight. Shiny bore w/ sharp lands & scattered pitting. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22494/RW). ANTIQUE. $600-800.
