Mexican War Era U.S. Model 1841 ''Mississippi'' Percussion Rifle, George W. Tryon contract, NVSN, .54 cal., 33'' barrel, with brass blade front and dovetailed notch rear sights, is marked ''US/JCB/P'' (the latter in a sunken oval), and ''1848'' on top tang; the beveled-edge lockplate is marked ''Tryon/US'' ahead of the hammer, and ''Philada/PA/1847'' vertically behind; brass furniture including serpentine sideplate, two spring-retained barrel bands (top band of the double-strap type with iron sling swivel), two-piece triggerguard with iron sling swivel at front, and distinctive patchbox with hinged lid opening to trap in butt for spare nipple (present), patches and other spare parts; steel ramrod with brass tulip head; oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd 1846-48, in quantity of only 5,000 guns. Condition is very good, the barrel, lock and hammer with an overall gunmetal gray color, the brass with a light age patina. Stock is solid with scattered age/use marks and light roughness but generally smooth and with good color; markings are clear, edges are mostly sharp. Action is strong, the nipple a replacement; bore is overall bright with sharp rifling. Est.: $1,000-$2,000. (Antique)
