AWARD RIFLE. Cal. 7.62 NATO. S# 1777758. There are electro penciled matching #s on the inside of the floorplate & underside of bolt. S# is stamped in stock on the right rear of the action mortise & is not visible when rifle is assembled. No markings are visible in the bbl. channel. Bbl. 24" & is marked on right side "7.62MM" & "SA 11010457 SPL 9 65 MD50 P M" plus "defense acceptance" mark. These interesting rifles were developed by the Navy for match competition and graded into 2 different grades. Those showing a higher level of accuracy were designated Grade A & given National Match sights. The Grade B rifles including this example were fitted w/ standard sights. This rifle has the late type bbl. which does not use a chamber insert but was mfg. in 7.62 NATO. Interestingly this receiver has an unusually low S# for a Navy match rifle. Late type aperture rear sight, windage knob is marked "HRA W". Markings enhanced in gold coloration. Blade front sight w/ protective ears. Bbl., bolt, trigger housing & hammer are marked "SA". National Match Operating rod is marked "RA". Floorplate marked on bottom at outside in script "Navy Match 1960". Single slot gas cyl. lock screw. Stacking swivel is solidly fixed. Walnut stock set. Buttstock is unmarked except for "B" at end of grip. Buttstock has had extensive match conditioning work including use of bedding compound in action area & has been heavily coated w/ gloss finish to protect from moisture. Handguards have been tightened w/ bedding compound & rear handguard has been shortened to give the necessary clearance ahead of the receiver ring. Rear handguard has notably lighter shade than front.
