MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 40". Bbl. is marked on top left flap over chamber w/ "VP" eagle proof & marked on top flap "1864". 2 leaf rear sight. Stud type front sight. Bolster & lockplate have spread wing eagle. Lock is additionally marked "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" & dated "1864". Lockplate & hammer have beveled edges. Walnut stock marked on left panel w/ faint "ESA" inspector's cartouche. Additionally has another illegible cartouche. Forend has 3 bands retained by springs. Upper & lower bands are solid; middle band has sling swivel. Buttplate marked "US" on tang. Correct tulip headed ramrod. Brown leather sling w/ single brass hook & sliding keeper. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: US model 1855 / 70 socket bayonet w/ 18" blade measuring 3/4" wide marked on top "US". Locking ring is present. Fitted leather scabbard made w/ black leather & has brass tip. Brown leather belt attachment fastened w/ copper rivets is marked "R.NECE PHILAD" & is marked in oval "U.S. ORD DEPT A.D. LAIDLEY SUBINSPECTOR". Bright bayonet has been cleaned but is turning somewhat gray; has light wear & peppery oxidation. Scabbard has wear & scuffing but stitching & rivets are tight. Reproduction hardwood tompion. CONDITION: stock has worn original finish w/ flaking & handling marks. 5 Notable notches w/ missing chip on left side of buttstock below comb. Bright metal has been cleaned & is returning to a gray coloration w/ spots of oxidation & fine pitting plus scattered handling marks. Bore has strong lands but is turning dark w/ an oxidized & lightly pitting appearance. (01-23704/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-700.
