Springfield Model 1842 Percussion Infantry Musket, NVSN, .69 smoothbore cal., 42'' round barrel with integral bayonet lug mounted below and just behind muzzle; beveled steel lockplate marked with spread-wing American eagle over ''US'' ahead of hammer and ''Spring/field/1846'' in three lines vertically behind; iron furniture including serpentine sideplate, three spring-retained barrel bands (sling swivel on middle band, double-strap front band with integral front sight), triggerguard with long rear tang and front-mounted sling swivel, buttplate marked ''US'' ahead of top tang screw, iron ramrod, and walnut fullstock. Mfg'd 1844-55, originally with metal left in the ''bright'' and oil-finished stock. Condition is about good as-found, with iron parts showing the deep dark-brown patina of great age with scattered erosion that is quite heavy at nipple and breech area; markings are mostly clear (excepting barrel at breech). Stock is sound with the expected nicks and scrapes of age and hard military use; all parts fit well and appear original. Sling swivels were removed long ago; the ramrod a contemporary replacement; a notched ramp-type rear sight made of hardwood is mounted ahead of the breech; initials are carved into both sides of the buttstock. Action is strong; bore appears smooth and clean. A desirable Model '42 musket with this Mexican War-Era date, which will improve with a thorough cleaning. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)
