U.S. WWI ERA ROCK ISLAND MODEL 1903 BOLT ACTION
MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 413709. Bbl. 24". Marked behind front sight "SA flaming bomb 9-28". Ladder rear sight graduated to 2850 yards w/out volley notch. Graduations enhanced in white. Black windage knob; dish elevation knob; flat blade front sight. Rifle has been through 2 or more overhauls which resulted in a replacement bbl., stock & bolt. Rock Island marked receiver; not drilled for "Hatcher hole". Bolt w/ swept handle & smooth body is marked "R" underneath bolt handle & appears to be from early Remington 1903 production for WWII. Safety is marked "R". Unmarked cutoff w/ blocked letters. All milled furniture except stamped "R" marked stacking swivel. "C" Type pistol grip stock marked faintly on left side of trigger guard w/ "boxed S.A." & "S.P. / G." overhaul marking. Marked under grip w/ "encircled P" proof. Marked at end of grip w/ "boxed P" overhaul proof & also marked "AA" indicating additional overhaul at Augusta Arsenal in GA. All milled furniture w/ smooth trap buttplate. Handguard w/ sighting groove & 2 enforcing clips. CONDITION: stock set has extensive wear, staining & handling marks w/ crack on left side extending from trigger guard tang through grip area. Notable sm. missing chips at lower edge of grip. Worn metal has turned mostly gray w/ handling marks & scattered light pitting. Bore is shiny but w/ lightly worn lands. (23-627/RW). CURIO. $400-600.
