MILITARY RIFLE. CAL. 30-06. S# 1079719. Bbl. 24" replacement bbl., marked behind the front sight "SA", flaming bomb, and "2-33". Import-marked on the right side of the bbl. The 1903 MKI rifles were made with an ejection port and the left receiver rail to accommodate the Pedersen device, which increased the short-range fire power of these rifles, which was useful in trench warfare. The devices did not prove popular. Many rifles were subsequently rebuilt with standard parts and issued as service rifles. Ladder rear sight with volley notch graduated to 2850 yards. Flat windage and elevation knobs. Blade front sight. Replacement bolt is of the 1903-A3 type. Bolt handle marked "R". Smith Corona scalloped bolt shroud. Safety marked "R". Replacement standard cutoff. Trigger is a standard type. All milled furniture, except the stamped trap buttplate. Walnut stock set. Straight grip stock is of the standard type, without an ejection slot. Stock has two recoil bolts and is marked with only two encircled "P" proofs under the grips, indicating an arsenal overhaul. Cutoff recess has a small amount of additional wood removed. CONDITION: stock set has heavy wear, staining, and handling marks, plus a very dark-appearing arsenal rework finish with notable chipping in the toe area and small cracks ahead of the trigger guard tang. Metal has extensive wear and a mix of shades of parkerization plus areas of patina. Lower band and swivel have notable light gray colorization. Fair bore, turning dark, with worn lands. (24-1351/RW). CURIO. $600-900.
