MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 3070390. Bbl. 24" marked behind front sight "RA", flaming bomb, "3-42". Ladder rear sight graduated to 2850 yards. Blade front sight. Sheet metal sight protector stamped "R" "US". These rifles were mfg. by Remington using tooling from the Rock Island Arsenal. There were a series of minor changes made at Remington's suggestion to simplify mfg. Noticeable on this rifle is the rear sight base made without lightening cuts and the receiver tang is drilled through. The bolt has the early straight down handle. Both parts appear to be marked by a "4" on the cocking piece. Cutoff is marked "R". Milled trigger guard marked "R" on the right rear trigger guard bow. Rear sight parts and milled bbl. bands marked "R". Fine checkered stamped trap buttplate. Stock set is a replacement using the late production pistol grip type. Marked with boxed "RIA / FK" on the left side. Stock is marked "K" in cutoff recess. Partially encircled "P" proof under grip. Brown leather model 1907 sling with "1942" date. Nickel plated oiler in butt. CONDITION: stock set has very good appearance with legible markings. Metal retains 80% vintage arsenal rework. Parkerized finish with light wear. Bore has lightly worn lance with frosted grooves. PROVENANCE: from the Lifelong Collection of Jim Williams (24-2699/RW). CURIO. $1,200-1,800.
