CARBINE. Cal. 30 Carb. S# 3487555. Bbl. 18", marked behind the front sight "SAGINAW S.G. DIV." / "GENERAL MOTORS". "P" proof at the midpoint of the bbl. Consignor-supplied information states that this carbine was left on board the APA 153 Attack Transport U.S.S. LAURENS by a U.S. Marine serving as part of a U.S.M.C. Air Wing landing at Buckner Bay, Okinawa, on July 24–25, 1945. The notes also supply other interesting information regarding Saginaw-produced carbines. Carbine has the correct flip-type sight marked "S" on the left side. Blade front sight with protective ears. Receiver is marked "SG" on the bottom left corner, below the wood line. Narrow bbl. band with vertical clamping screw plus stamped swivel. Straight-cut slide marked "SG". Flat "SG"-marked bolt. Milled "SG" trigger housing. Unmarked push-button safety. Mag. catch marked "SG". Unmarked straight-cut hammer. Recoil plate is marked "SG". Low wood oval cut buttstock. Buttstock is marked on the right side with boxed "SG" and crossed cannons. The marking in the sling slot is not legible. The two-rivet handguard is marked "RSG". MAGS: 1 - 15 rd., marked "A.I.". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of consignor-supplied information. Canvas muzzle cover marked "VICTORY MFG. INC. 1944". CONDITION: stock set has a very nice appearance with legible markings on the side of the butt. Stock set has light wear and handling marks. Metal retains 80% of its dark, parkerized finish with thinning and light wear. Bbl. has notable tool marks near the proof and at the rear in the chamber area. Receiver has coinciding tool marks mostly below the wood line; this appears to be from an attempt to remove the barrel. Very good, shiny bore. PROVENANCE: from the Collection of Curtis H. Halvorson. (23-5890/RW). Curio. $600-1,000.
