PA CAVALRY. Extremely rare, Union officer’s double-breasted shell jacket w/ wonderful quatrefoil decoration on sleeves, slouch hat w/ cavalry insignia, sash & sword belt. There is also a pocket sized New Testament w/ Savage’s penciled name and original bill-of-sale. Edward G. Savage (1829-1891) born in England, was engineer in Harrisburg, PA prior to enlisting as Captain, Company F, 10th Pa. Infantry, a 3 month unit. After muster-out, Savage was commissioned Captain of Company B, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Promoted to major March 19, 1863, & Lt. Col. May 30, 1864. He resigned September 26, 1864. The 9th PA Cavalry saw numerous actions while in the Army of Ohio, they were crucial at the battle of Lebanon, Tennessee battling w/ John Hunt Morgan’s Cavalry. After Morgan’s surrender, 9th moved to Nashville as part of the Army of the Cumberland. The 9th was involved in numerous skirmishes before & after the battle of Chickamauga & then moved into East Tennessee fighting around Knoxville. Lt. Col. Savage would resign before the Atlanta campaign. After returning to Harrisburg, PA, Savage worked as a foundryman. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original signed bill of sale from 1999. Large file w/ copies of service records, pension records, & history of 9th PA Cav. CONDITION: Classic Civil war era double breasted shell jacket retains 14 - 23mm eagle “C” Horstmann, Philadelphia made buttons on the breast & 3 - 16mm Horstmann eagle “C” buttons on each sleeve. Body of coat made from a brown wool/cotton blend. Sleeves are extremely bulbous at elbows for a jacket, measuring 8.5” & 5” cuff. There is scattered moth tracking, small holes & a few repairs. Lined in quilted polished green cotton, sleeves are lined w/ a faded blue coarse cotton lining. Pockets are lined w/ polished brown cotton. 4 Rows of bullion trim make up quatrefoils on sleeves making for a very impressive appearance, complete though frayed at folded edges at cuffs. Double border Lt. Col. straps are tacked on at each corner, very good & complete. Slouch hat has several repaired holes on top, has sewn bound edge, green silk .25” ribbon under officer’s hat cord. 4” Looped oval insignia, tin backed, embroidered cross sabers on black velvet background w/ small attached metal number “9”. 2” Brown patent leather sweat-band has been re-sewn or added. 110” Sash is complete, frayed w/ numerous small reductions & tears, faded to purple. Tassels scuffed w/ red color. Sword belt is good & sound overall. Well-detailed eagle buckle w/ matching benchmark to keeper, 1.25” tongue, black patent leather sound w/ scuffing, chipped & cracked where buckle attaches. Made w/ only one brass sword hanger w/ an integral protective leather shield. Over the shoulder belt is made from different type of period leather & added after original manufacture. Pocket Bible is very good overall w/ scuffing & worn through at several edges. Shell Jacket is rare and particularly attractive.
