UNIQUE “ATTIC CONDITION” COLT PATERSON MODEL 1839
REVOLVING SHOTGUN, FRESH FROM MAINE ESTATE WITH ORIGINAL RAMROD. Cal. 62. S# 50. Bbl. 28.5" smoothbore Damascus. The model 1839 shotgun is one of the rarest of all Paterson firearms, amazing that there are two variants in this auction. It was the most powerful & devastating of Paterson arms. No more than 225 were manufactured; no two survivors are the same. This is an honest “as found” uncleaned example w/ dark patina & only example we are aware w/ original integral bottom rib w/ three pipes for ramrod. The standard 3.5" cyl. has longitudinal crack in one chamber which was an inherent flaw in Paterson cylinders as many were returned to Colt for repair. Right side of bbl. lug has script patent markings terminating w/ “snake & star” like on Texas Patersons. CONDITION: good overall. Matching serial number “50” found on back of cylinder & bbl. lug. Gun appears all original other than 2 screws but no other numbers were noted, not disassembled. Iron patina, patent markings & serial numbers well discerned. No discernible etched panel decoration on cylinder. Crack in one chamber as noted, integral bottom rib has detached solder for 2-3" near lug. Original unique ramrod has brass tips, flared at front. Stock has contemporary break repair from time of use w/ wood peg on right side just rear of frame, otherwise stock is sound & well fit retaining much of an old varnish finish. Traces of Damascene brown twist finish on bbl. is visible though mostly dark iron patina. Mechanically functional w/ clear pitted bore. (01-19095/JS). ANTIQUE. $12,000-15,000.
