UNIQUE CIVIL WAR HAND DRAWN MAP OF THE
DEFENSES OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA BY CAPTAIN G.D. HUFFMAN OF THE 46TH VIRGINIA INFANTRY. This map measures approx. 10 1/2" x 17" & is housed in a rustic wooden frame measuring approx. 19 1/2" x 26 1/2". An intensely visually attractive map drawn on light blue paper showing the many defenses of Charleston Harbor. The Atlantic Ocean, Charleston Harbor, Cooper River, Ashley River & Stono River are depicted in dark blue. Marshes are shown in black. Fortifications & gun placements are rendered in orange. There are many written notations on the map that have been conclusively proven to be the handwriting of Captain Guy Dingus Huffman of the 46th Virginia Infantry. An inscription at the base of the map reads "For Capt. Huffman Co. K. 46. Va. Regt.". It is likely that Captain Huffman also drew the map itself & depicted ships attacking Charleston & blockading it's harbor. The map, among its many details & intricacies, depicts the gun placements of General P.G.T. Beauregard, fortifications & commanders, ironclads & ships of the line, railroad lines as well as a list of relative distances of various installations from Charleston proper. Captain Huffman was already a seasoned warrior by the time he reached the defenses of Charleston in 1863. He suffered a wound at Cemetery Hill but returned to service. He enlisted at New Castle, Virginia as a lieutenant & was quickly promoted to captain. Initially he had voted against succession, but loyally followed his home state of Virginia into rebellion.
